Dún Laoghaire Baths Arts Residency

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council wishes to select artist(s), arts groups or arts organisations for a series of ambitious 3-month residencies in the new Dún Laoghaire Baths.
The opportunity to be the inaugural artists in residence in Workshop 4, Dún Laoghaire Baths is open to artists of all artforms. The focus of the residency is to provide an opportunity for the creation of new work that actively engages with visitors to this new cultural facility.
Workshop 4 is a new programmed arts workshop space for the creation, production and celebration of new work of scale with a focus on visitor engagement. It aims to support as many artforms as possible within the capacity of the facilities available.
In 2023 one commission is funded by Creative Ireland and two commissions are funded by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office. This opportunity is managed by the Council’s Arts Office.
Residency Details
The focus of the residency is to create work that is responsive to Dún Laoghaire Baths and invites visitors in to this new workshop facility to engage with your art practice.
Applicants are invited to consider the location, history, cultural or social context of Dún Laoghaire Baths in their residency proposal. The work can engage with the audience through active participation, co-creation, installation, performance or workshops.
The residency will be selected through an open selection process. The artist(s)/ group(s) will be awarded a commission of €14,000 for the 3-month residency. The periods available are
March – May 2023
June – August 2023
September – November 2023
Visitors must have regular access to your workspace – this is a key part of the residency. Visitor participation in your process or outcome is limited to Workshop 4 only. Work cannot take place in the other Artist workspaces operating on the same floor level or the Coffee shop above.
The art practice must be suitable to the residency space provided. The space, measuring 42sq metres, has great natural light with large French doors overlooking Dublin Bay, 4 windows and overhead skylights. There are 2 Belfast sinks, a bench for material preparation, tables and chairs. The floor is polished concrete, there is underfloor heating. The maximum room capacity is 66 people standing, 21 seated. It will be available for your sole use during the period of the residency and has independent access.
Eligibility
Applications are invited from artists who are living in, working in, from or studied in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown who have a project that clearly responds to the theme of Dún Laoghaire Baths.
This opportunity is open to individual artists, artists who work together in a collaborative manner, arts groups or Arts Organisations.
The proposed residency project must be responsive to Dún Laoghaire Baths and this must be clearly outlined in your proposal.
What we offer:
· Residency Fee of €14,000*
· Residency space for 3-month period
* Please note that this amount is fully inclusive of fee, transport of artworks or materials (including insurance while in transit) display costs, technical support, expenses, documentation and promotion if required, necessary insurance and VAT.
The Commissioners will cover all costs associated with providing the residency space including rent and utilities.
The resident artists will be required to have Public Liability Insurance with cover of €6.5 million with a specific indemnity to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. If necessary, the artist will also be required to have Employer’s Liability Insurance.
Individual artists will be paid their residence fee via the Council’s Payroll for taxation purposes only. Companies will be paid via invoice. All payments are by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
Proposals & Selection Process
Applicants may only submit one project proposal for the Dún Laoghaire Baths Arts residency. However, other opportunities are currently available in Dún Laoghaire Baths which individual visual artists can apply for as well, if applicable.
Applicants will be asked to highlight the 3-month residency period they wish to be considered for and can select all three if available.
Selection criteria
Applications will be adjudicated by a panel of Council Officers, independent artists and arts workers. The decision of the selection panel is final.
Submissions will be evaluated using the following criteria:
Suitability and feasibility of proposal (40/100)
Consideration of the visitor to Workshop 4, Dún Laoghaire Baths should be clearly demonstrated in proposals submitted. The visitor has been identified as a mix of dlr residents, local arts community, tourist and day visitor.
Quality of previous work (40/100)
Previous experience of delivering residencies or art projects with a public engagement / visitor focus (20/100)
