dlr Visual Artist Studios
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office seeks to award three artist studio workspaces for a period of 1 year. Two studios are available from September 2024 and one starts in March 2025. These studios are open to visual artists working in any medium however, your working methods need to be compatible with the space available.
The Council’s Arts Development Plan identifies the lack of accessible artist workspace as the key barrier to artists career progression in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. This opportunity is an action of the arts development plan which seeks to address this challenge and support the career of dlr Visual Artist for a 1-year period.
The selected Artists will each be awarded exclusive use of an artist’s studio in Dún Laoghaire Baths, and a materials budget of €6,500.
Dún Laoghaire Baths Artists Studios have been operational for one year. This opportunity received 84 submissions last year, so the selection process is highly competitive.
Description of the Artist Workspaces:
Studios sizes are listed below, the size of each workspace is like one room in a home. The art practice must be suitable to the workspace provided.
They do not have 3 phase electricity or mechanical ventilation. There is no chemical management onsite. The size of the doors limit the size of materials you can get into the studio, and the size of artworks you can safely get out of the building.
There are 3 individual artist workspaces and a shared a communal area.
Workshop 1, 19.6 sqm in size with 1 large window and 2 doors (1 external and 1 internal)
Workshop 2, 14.8 sqm in size with 4 windows and 1 internal door
Workshop 3, 17.8 sqm in size with 1 window and 1 internal door
Artist communal area, 45 sqm with 1 large window and 1 door
All individual studios are equipped with a large sink, storage, lights, power sockets and wifi. A worktable and chair are provided. The floor is polished concrete, there is underfloor heating. There is access to a public bathroom and tea station.
The Happy Out café occupies the top floor; the workspaces are the floor below. Artists are advised to attend the on-site briefing or drop into the building at another time to consider the level of noise a busy open plan coffee shop makes. This noise can be heard on the floor below, so may impact your use of the space.
While the workspace has 24hr access this is to facilitate the work schedule of awarded artists only. Artists are not permitted to live or sleep onsite overnight or invite others into the building outside its normal operating times, which changes with the season, but is currently open 7 days a week from:
- 7am – 5pm, Sunday – Wednesday
- 7am – 10pm, Thursday – Saturday
Artists must agree to adhere to the Health and Safety Policy of Dún Laoghaire Baths and work with Council staff, our Facility Management Company and Coffee Shop operator to ensure the safety of artists, building staff and visitors alike.
Council Staff and Facilities Management contractors will have access to your studio to clean and maintain essential equipment. Every effort is made to keep this distribution to a minimum.
