This opportunity is for professional artists working in socially engaged/collaborative arts practices particularly in the context of integration settings, including accommodation settings for people seeking International Protection and for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection as well as in community settings.
We acknowledge socially engaged/collaborative arts practices require time and resources to develop and devise trusting and meaningful relationships, robust partnerships and safe and meaningful ways for artist and communities to work together in what can often be challenging contexts.
We are open to applications from artists who have experience or interest in working in the integration context and artists who are seeking or have sought international protection in Ireland who are interested in working in this context.
What does this bursary offer?
- €8,000
- Support from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office and dlr Local Authority Integration Team (dlr LAIT).
About this bursary
In 2024/25 Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office will fund two artists with the time, resources, and support to develop their skills to work with:
· Applicants for International Protection
· Those with Refugee, Subsidiary Protection, or Permission to remain status
· Programme Refugees
· Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTP)
· dlr Integration Forum
We want artists to use these bursaries to explore and develop their skills in working with new arrivals, the migrant community and local community to create art. This bursary will focus on artistic development.
We want artists to use these bursaries to:
· explore and develop their collaborative/ socially engaged arts practices practically when working in integration settings.
· allow time and resources to test out and develop methods of working with people to create art.
· use the time to develop partnerships that best support the artist and the community to work together in the future
We are less concerned with a final product, for example a performance, exhibition, or a song. This may be part of the outcome from this opportunity, but it is not the main objective.
These opportunities are funded by the Arts Council and supported by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Create.
What do I get if I am successful?
€8,000 is the maximum award for each artist. We intend to support two artists in 2024/25.
This will cover your time and the resources you need to develop your work. We expect these two opportunities to be awarded in December 2024 and to finish before the end of September 2025.
What does the €8,000 cover?
- Time to research and think about your work.
- Time to develop an idea with people that dlr LAIT support.
- Time to develop both peer and community relationships for example collaborators, expanding local networks, engaging with relevant services, connecting with community, organisations and agencies that work with people who have experienced International Protection systems.
- Time to develop your technical skills to assist with your work.
- Time to think critically about your practice.
- Time and cost of fees to work with a mentor or partner to develop your art practice in integration settings.
- Materials and other costs that relate to working with a community. (For example, the cost of cups of tea and biscuits, expenses incurred by the community to enable their participation such as travel).
- Any other costs that potential participants need to engage with the artist.
- Fees for professionals that you may need to work with. For example, a photographer, other artists, experts in integration that you may need to work with.
Support from dlr Arts Office
- We will offer support to the successful artists. This opportunity is for professional artists with socially engaged/collaborative practices. While we assume that you are experienced in working with communities, we understand you may need additional support when working in integration contexts, you may benefit from check ins/reviews with dlr Arts Office. If you feel you would benefit from working with a mentor, please apply for this support in your application.
- It will help us if you could identify how we can help in your application. You may need help from dlr LAIT, this needs to be outlined in your application.
What do we expect from the successful artists?
- We expect the successful artists to work with people that are supported by dlr LAIT in our County. This may involve exploring ways to work together. We do not expect an outcome for this opportunity, but you must tell us ways that you intend to engage with people through this opportunity.
- To keep the Arts Office informed about how you are getting on and to be honest about the challenges that you encounter. dlr Arts Office and dlr LAIT will aim to learn from the selected artists for future projects/commissions in this area of practice so critical feedback is helpful.
- To meet with the Arts Office and dlr LAIT and the other artist from time to time and to act as informal support for each other.
- To share your experience in the future with other artists. This may be as part of a talk, presentation, or other sharing event. We will pay an additional fee for any sharing event.
