Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council established the Shop Front Improvement Scheme to support the improvement of the overall appearance and accessibility of commercial properties that front onto public streets within the County. The appearance of shop fronts and the buildings in which they reside have a considerable impact and influence on the character of a place. They are an essential element not only of the buildings in which they are set, but also of the wider streetscape. A shop front that has been designed with respect given to the architecture of the building and character of the surrounding area can add charm and vitality, making it attractive to shoppers and visitors alike.
The shop front improvement scheme will support business owners who contribute to the local environment and raise the image of town centres in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown that lead to increased local and visitor footfall.
Eligibility
Business owners of existing independent shops whose premises front onto public streets in the County's towns and villages are eligible to apply for assistance in accordance with the Shop Front Improvement Scheme.
The assistance provided by Council is limited to 50% of the shop front cost with a maximum allowable grant of €5,000 per applicant.
Assistance cannot be offered in retrospect for costs already incurred.
Application must be made in advance of any works.
The applicant must be the owner or lessee of the subject premises and must provide proof of same.
The design, materials and proportion of the planned shopfront should be appropriate and respect the scale and fabric of the building and/or street of which they form part.
The applicant must be an “independent” business; applications will not be accepted from large chains and multiples. The definition of “independent” will be at the discretion of the Council.
No unauthorised development can have taken place on the subject premises, and the future use must comply with existing planning permission on the premises.
